3.5 My Hair & Skin Beauty Routine

For those of you who know me, you probably know that I’m not much of a beauty guru. In fact, on most days you can find me with my hair up in a big messy bun, & not an ounce of makeup on. But, as crazy as it sounds, I’ve received a couple emails from people asking me about my “pre-wedding beauty routine”! Ha! Me? Of all people?! I’m flattered!

Nevertheless, I thought it could be kind of fun to share the products that I use. I actually receive messages on my Instagram account asking about hair products a lot, and I’m always happy to help another curly-haired sister out! So without further ado…

HAIR:

About a year and a half ago, I made a commitment to myself that I would start taking better care of my hair. Gone are the days of buying the cheapest shampoo and conditioner I could find. I went to a nice salon, met the hairstylist of my dreams, and soaked up all the advice that he could give me. Ever since that first appointment, I’ve noticed how much healthier my hair is – it no longer feels like straw! And my biggest secret (am I gonna regret posting this on the Internet??) — I only wash my hair once a week! Twice if I get insanely sweaty, but even then sometimes just a rinse will do. This makes splurging on the more expensive products that much more reasonable. They may be $20/bottle, but I only have to restock once a year…and that’s a win in my book 😉

What I Use:

The Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Repair Line: Moisturizing Lather Shampoo, Keratin Cream Rinse, & the Keratin Intensive Treatment. (The last one I use with every other wash).

Why I Like It:

Aside from leaving my hair shiny, hydrated, and soft, I love Paul Mitchell brand because they’re one of the few hair care companies that does not test on animals. Additionally, they’re dedicated to preserving waterways, planting trees, and finding energy-efficient ways to run their company.

What I Use:

Suave Dry Shampoo with Keratin Infusion.

Why I Like It:

Because I fully admitted to not washing my hair daily, and because I work out every day, dry shampoo has become my best friend! I use this to give my hair more volume if it falls flat, and to fight off any oils that might build up after a couple of days. Dry shampoo is magic guys, trust me. (I recommend watching a youtube video on how to apply is you’re unsure!)

What I Use:

It’s a 10 Lite, leave-in conditioner.

Why I Like It:

I try not to put a ton of product in my hair, but this little spray has been a game changer. It’s super light and doesn’t weigh your hair down, doesn’t leave any residue, isn’t oily, and is a great de-tangler (especially if you constantly workout with a high bun and get giant knots in the back of your head…oops!)

SKIN:

I spend a lot of time outside in the sun, so I tend to have pretty dry skin. It’s taken me a long time to find what works for me. But, I think that I’ve finally got it down!

What I Use:

To Remove Makeup: Coconut Oil! Yes, you read correctly! Do yourself a favor and buy a jar of coconut oil at your grocery store (I love Trader Joes brand, personally), keep it in your bathroom, and use it daily to remove your makeup! Simply wet face, apply oil and rub, and wipe off with a warm washcloth.

Why I Love This:

Makeup removing wipes can get expensive. One jar of coconut oil can last you for ages. Plus, it cuts down on waste and is completely natural! Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer for any other dry skin spots you might have! (I love rubbing my cuticles with it to keep my hands soft and moisturized).

Face Wash: Yes to Coconut; Ultra Hydrating Facial Crème Cleanser

Face Cream: Yes to Coconut; Ultra Hydrating Facial Souffle Moisturizer

Why I Love These:

These products are super light, and while they moisturize my skin, they don’t leave it oily like some lotions do. The Cream leaves my face feeling smooth and hydrated all day. This brand is also cruelty-free, which is important to me!

Sunscreen: Neutrogena Ultra-Sheen Dry Touch Sunscreen and Rimmel BB Cream with SPF 15 Sunscreen

Why I Love These:

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned from my dad, it’s the importance of wearing sunscreen and protecting my skin. Tans fade over time, but you only get one face in your lifetime! Plus, seeing older folks who spent lots of time in the sun getting burnt, walking around the Pier with leathery skin, is enough to make me apply and reapply any time I’m going to be outside for an extended period of time. Also, having a redheaded fiancé is a surefire way to make you remember sunscreen wherever you go. We keep bottles at home and in both cars at all time! I love using Neutrogena on my face because it doesn’t leave my skin oily or cause me to break out afterwards, and I like the BB Cream with Protection for an everyday protection, and it still gives my face a little bit of color!

And there you have it! Like I said, I like to keep my “beauty routine” pretty simple, and as I’m getting ready for the Big Day, I’m focusing mostly on drinking lots of water! It’s crazy what a difference the proper amount of H20 can do for your skin and overall health. If you have any other questions, send them my way! This was fun!

xoxo
